All Year


Big Buddy/Little Buddy Program
Older students throughout the school are paired with students from younger grades. These students partner together throughout the year for various activities. 8th grade is buddied with first, Fourth grade with Kindergarten, Third grade with preschool, and seventh grade with second graders.


Retreats
Retreats are scheduled as they become available. 8th graders annually attend a retreat, usually in fall.


Sacramental Programs
Sacramental preparation is done in conjunction with the Faith Development Department. Currently the sacrament of First Holy Communion is celebrated in 2nd grade, and the sacrament of Reconciliation is held in 5th grade.


School Prayer Services
Scheduled prayer services are held in Advent and in Lent (Stations of the Cross). Prayer services are also held as needed or to celebrate special holy days throughout the year. Specific dates will be communicated in the bulletin and through the school newsletter.


Weekly All-School Liturgy
1st through 8th graders regularly attend mass each Friday. Occasionally the mass will be moved due to a holy day. Kindergarteners attend occasionally throughout the year. A mass schedule is distributed at the beginning of the school year and each grade is responsible for the readings and bringing up gifts on their designated day.


Fall


Grandparent/Special Person's Day
In fall, students in grades one through three invite their special people to attend a liturgy and lunch in their honor.


Winter


Christmas Program
This program is organized by the music department. It culminates in two performances (one in the afternoon, one in the evening) in December. See the school calendar for specific dates.


Forensics (Grades 7 and 8)
Forensics preparation is done within the middle school Literature classes. Students audition to make the traveling team and compete in two to four meets each year.


Doughnuts for Dad
Held in winter, students in 1st and 2nd grade invite a special man in their lives to join them for doughnuts and activities. Some activities include: a scavenger hunt with their special person, the kids sing for them, and some of the children give "speeches".


Total Catholic Education Week
A week (usually the last in January) celebrating Catholic Education within our parish. This parish-wide celebration includes special activities throughout the week. Often things like students vs. teachers volleyball, partner reading, pajama day, class color day and a special youth liturgy are included in the schedule. The week culminates with the annual Pep Rally for God. Each grade prepares a song to praise and worship God in some way. The songs are then performed for the entire community on the Friday of Catholic Education Week.


Spring


Camping Outing
Our 8th graders annually attend a retreat at Camp Nan a Bo Sho to celebrate their time at SJS and bond one last time as a class. This spiritually based retreat is held in late spring.


Drama (8th grade)
All 8th grade students participate in an annual dramatic presentation. All 8th graders are involved. Performances are held at Xavier High School and practices are usually held during the school day. See the school calendar for specific dates.


Graduation and Awards Celebration
Graduation and awards celebration - Our 8th graders are rewarded for their accomplishments in an awards ceremony in late May each year. The awards ceremony is held in church in the afternoon of a school day, and planned by the SJS staff. The graduation liturgy and celebration are planned by SJS staff, and held after the awards celebration. The graduation reception, following the ceremony, is planned by parents of the graduating class.


Kindergarten Graduation
Our Kindergarteners go to church for a prayers service and graduation ceremony at the culmination of their Kindergarten year.


May Crowning
Each May the various classrooms celebrate the month of Mary with a special crowning.


Mother's Day Tea
Held in May, the Mother's Day Tea invites Moms of 1st and 2nd grade students to join them in celebrating motherhood. The day starts off in the Msgr. Jim room with speeches and a special video made by the kids, followed by dancing, cookies and punch in the cafeteria.


National Day of Prayer
The students of SJS enter the poster/essay contest each April. The winners are honored at a special prayer service the first Thursday in May.


Spring Concert
This program is organized by the music department. It culminates in two performances (one in the afternoon, one in the evening) in late April or early May. See the school calendar for specific dates.


Summer


Summer School
Summer School is offered through the Little Chute Area School District. The books are distributed in March and need to be returned to the Little Chute Elementary School.
